A customer of ours faced the logistical challenge of transporting eight family members and friends, along with their bikes, from Stanwell (nr. Heathrow) to South London for the London to Brighton bike ride scheduled for September 2023. The primary requirements for Mr. L Thorpe, were a large vehicle capable of accommodating all the bikes and allowing entry into the ULEZ zone without charges. Additionally, a people carrier for 10 occupants was needed to follow behind.
Solution:
After careful consideration, Mr. Thorpe opted for a two-vehicle solution. The first hire vehicle chosen was a long wheelbase Mercedes eSprinter, providing ample space for the bikes, luggage, and essentials for the journey. Its capacity ensured that all participants, along with their equipment, could be comfortably accommodated. The eSprinter’s design allowed for cost-effective travel within the ULEZ zone, a crucial factor for the journey.
The second vehicle selected for hire was a Hybrid VW Transporter, chosen for its ability to seat up to nine people, including the driver. Driven by Mr. Thorpe’s wife, the VW Transporter served as the ideal people carrier to follow behind the group, ensuring everyone reached their destination together.
Execution:
The logistical execution on the day of the London to Brighton bike ride was flawless. All participants were transported punctually to the starting point, ready for the challenging 55-mile ride. The Mercedes eSprinter effortlessly accommodated the bikes, luggage, and refreshments, ensuring a comfortable and stress-free journey for the cyclists.
Post-event, after a challenging and slightly gruelling ride, both vehicles played a crucial role in bringing everyone safely back home. The following day, the vehicles were returned to Sparks’ head office in Slough, concluding the transportation aspect of this successful operation.
