200mph and Beyond: The Sparks Group Celebrates Talan Skeels-Piggins’ Historic Record
Motorsport history was made on the runway at Elvington Airfield in Yorkshire, and everyone across the Sparks Group is celebrating. Former Winter Paralympian Talan Skeels-Piggins, who is paralysed from the chest down, has become the first paraplegic motorcyclist ever to break 200mph over a measured mile from a standing start.

A historic mile at Elvington
Riding at the Straightliners World Speed Record event, Talan recorded a maximum speed of 200.254mph, setting a new land speed record. It was the moment he had been working towards for 11 years, ever since he first made breaking the 200mph barrier his goal.
To put that in perspective, a standing-start mile gives a rider no run-up. Talan had to take his machine from stationary to beyond 200mph within a single mile, all while strapped to an adapted bike, because his injury leaves him with no functional sitting balance. It demands total trust in the machine and extraordinary nerve from the rider.
The man behind the record
Talan’s life has never followed an ordinary path. Raised in Cornwall, he was a keen all-round sportsman at Truro School before joining the Royal Navy, where he rose to Lieutenant and served as Fighter Controller aboard HMS York. His naval career took him across the world, from the Arctic Circle to the Falklands and the Gulf, before he became a PE teacher.
In March 2003, a motorcycle accident changed everything. His spine was shattered and his neck broken. Doctors gave him a 30 per cent chance of survival and told him that, if he survived, he would never walk again.
Eight days to a new goal
Talan’s response is the stuff of legend. Just eight days after his injury, he declared that he would learn to ski, make the national team and compete for Great Britain at the 2010 Winter Paralympics.
He kept his word. At the Vancouver 2010 Games, he was Britain’s top-placed male skier in both the Giant Slalom and Super-G. Two years later, he was crowned European Super-G Champion.
Racing against the odds
Despite everything, Talan never lost his passion for motorcycles. In 2012 he became the first paraplegic in the history of motor racing to earn an ACU Road Race licence and line up against able-bodied riders, competing at Snetterton with Club Thundersport.
International success soon followed. He became 600cc World Champion in the paralysed category at the Bridgestone World Cup in Italy in 2015, then topped the standings for paralysed riders again at the 2018 Disabled World Championship. Along the way, he also became the first paraplegic motorcycle race instructor and the first paraplegic to hold both motorcycle and car race licences.
Giving others the chance to ride
Talan’s achievements aren’t only about his own success. In 2011 he co-founded The Bike Experience, a charity at Castle Combe circuit in Wiltshire that gives paraplegic motorcyclists the chance to ride again, free of charge. Several paralysed riders have gone on to earn racing licences of their own through the charity, following the trail Talan blazed.

Our parent company, Sparks Welding Services, repairs his bike and, ahead of this record attempt, modified parts on his machine to handle the demands of a 200mph run. The team also supplied the oils and lubricants that kept the bike performing at its peak.
